As a native New Yorker and cofounder of White Ladder Productions, LLC, Jay Scala is an oral historian, documentary filmmaker, and writer dedicated to preserving powerful human stories with cinematic artistry.
Jay earned his undergraduate degree from Columbia University and holds two master’s degrees: one in Humanities and Social Thought from New York University, and another in Oral History from Columbia University. His academic foundation informs a storytelling approach that is both intellectually rigorous and deeply human.
Over the years, Jay has collaborated with a wide range of individuals and organizations, including the Art & History Museums of Maitland, American Mime Theatre, Amnesty International, Cities4All, Columbia University, CantaNYC, and The Dorothy M. Gillespie Foundation. These partnerships reflect both the trust he inspires and the range of stories he is entrusted to tell.
An artist at heart, Jay seamlessly blends thoughtful interviewing with masterful cinematography and meticulous post-production. From beautifully rendered oral histories and intimate interviews to full-length documentaries with original music, his work is crafted with precision, emotional depth, and cinematic elegance.
What sets Jay apart is his ability to capture authenticity. He creates a space where people feel seen, heard, and understood—then translates those moments into visually compelling narratives that resonate long after the screen goes dark. Every project is approached with care, creativity, and a commitment to excellence.
If you’re looking to preserve a legacy, document a mission, or tell a story that matters, Jay Scala brings the expertise, artistry, and vision to make it unforgettable.
